Part 2

Here’s a few more draft prints. The over all feel that I’m trying to portray isn’t coming across in these images so far, so I’ve decided to go back a complete another shoot. These photograph’s alone express loneliness, which is the opposite of my desired emotion. This time round I’m going to focus on Gordon and perhaps interfere and create some staged images.

Part 1

The scan doesn’t do these much justice. I’m fairly sure I’ll use them both as part of my exhibition on ‘Work’, though. The subject is Gordon Wise. He’s a Charter Marine Engineer who works along the River Deben, Woodbridge. Both images shot on a Pentax K-1000 on Ilford HP5 Plus B&W Film.

First Prints

My first real prints. I’m pleased with the final print, although, it’s not perfect. Some adjusting of the filters and patching may be in order next week. Although a whole film of essentially test shots, I am pleased with a few and may enlarge them in my own time.

Joel Sternfeld

America is a most common subject of Documentary Photography. “The Americans - Robert Frank” arguably the most famous. Joel’s images are very much of the time, a kind of adolescence of colour photography, a 1970’s edition of “The Americans” if you will. The understated colour reminds me of William Eggleston, although compositionally and contextually I strangely prefer them to Eggleston’s work.

”A photographer must choose a palette as painters choose theirs,”

“I was enthralled by Eggleston, as everybody was… but I knew if I was ever to make a mark, I’d have to go to places he hadn’t headed. He owned the poetic snapshot, but I’d always had this leaning towards narrative, and so I began to lean a little harder.”

The images above are from Sternfeld’s latest book First Pictures, spanning from 1971-1980
